VISITING ARTIST PROGRAM

February Featured Visiting Artists

Opening Exhibition Reception - Tuesday, February 7th, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Harbour View Gallery in Cape Coral will welcome photographer Eric Levin and jeweler Sherry Moesch as featured visiting artists at a public reception on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 6-8 pm.

Their work will be on display through February.  The gallery is located at 5789 Cape Harbour Drive, Cape Harbour, Cape Coral.

Born in Trinidad, Bolivia, Eric Levin moved to the United States at the age of 9 and now lives in Lehigh Acres. He thanks his father for passing on his love of nature and photography. He is inspired by the i incredible variety of life all around us. He enjoys finding new and interesting ways to photograph and share how he sees the world.

“I find that when I shoot, my attention is not necessarily on the end result (the final print), but on enjoying the experience of being in nature,” he explains.  “The end result will usually take care of itself.”

Sherry Moesch, a resident of Cape Coral, has taken several professional workshops in wire jewelry and metal-smithing to bridle her creativity into the jewelry field. But her first love is teaching. She gets great gratification from helping students learn to create their first work in a new field, whatever it is at the moment. She teaches classes in beading and Viking Knit Jewelry in Georgia, Vermont and Florida.

Her specialty, Viking Knitting, is a looping technique that preceded traditional knitting by centuries and was used by the Vikings not only for jewelry but also for woolen clothing.

Harbour View Gallery is an artists-owned cooperative gallery comprised of award winning local artists. It offers ever-changing displays of fine art paintings, pottery, photography, paper casting, jewelry, glass art and more. It is open daily 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

The gallery has hosted two visiting artists each month throughout its four-plus years of existence, providing more than 100 opportunities for other local artists to display their work alongside the eight artists who own and operate the gallery.

SECOND ANNUAL PAINT THE CAPE AT CAPE HARBOUR JANUARY 5-9 2011

The Marina at Cape Harbour hosts the exhibition and the awards ceremony and reception on Saturday and Sunday, January 8th and January 9th that are scheduled to coincide with the annual downtown Cape Coral Festival of the Arts. Twenty local and national artists from as far away as Michigan, Illinois, Delaware and Maryland will be setting up their easels with paint brushes poised to capture the scenic beauty of Cape Coral.  Artists can be found painting outside on January 5th and 6th at designated locations including downtown Cape Coral, Cape Harbour, the Marina at Tarpon Point and at many city parks and public places.

“Most people have never seen a work of art in progress and artists love to demonstrate their creative talents,” said event coordinator, Shirley Hales.  “This second annual fundraising event provides several days of artistic fun and helps raise money for a very worthwhile cause.”

Artists compete in the plein air event to earn top prizes and raise funds in support of the Cape Coral Community Foundation.  The Foundation, a 501 (C) 3 charitable organization, provides valuable assistance and services to the local community.

Artwork will be displayed and available for purchase at the Cape Harbour Pavilion.  A portion of the art sales goes to the Community Foundation.

Winning artists are announced during the Saturday evening reception held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

In addition to First, Second and Third Place winners, there are three new categories of awards this year:  “Best of the Cape” selected by competition judge, Julie Siler Olander, for the most outstanding painting of a Cape Coral icon; “People’s Choice” voted by the public; and “Artist’s Choice”, selected by the participating artists.  Julie hails from Cape Cod and is an accomplished plein air painter and instructor.

The reception food is donated by Rumrunners Restaurant and evening entertainment will be provided by a musical ensemble of students from Mariner High School.

Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Department is encouraging area students to draw or paint their favorite place in Cape Coral as part of its Winter Break Camp activities program.  Student art will be shown along with the plein air artists’ work.

“We are delighted with the participation of students from Mariner High School and the Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Department Winter Camp”, beams Beth Sanger, Cape Coral Community Foundation Executive Director. “And we are grateful to Urgent Care Center of Cape Coral, iBERIA Bank and our other financial supporters and donors who help make this event possible.”

Rounding out the weekend at Cape Harbour is a free wine tasting on Saturday and Sunday and the “Quick Draw” paint out Saturday afternoon.

Artists interested in applying for the 2011 Quick Draw and art supporters wanting information about sponsorship opportunities should call the Cape Coral Community Foundation or visit the Paint the Cape website:  www.paintthecape.com
